Week 10: One of the best weeks!
The first few days of the week were also the last days of Paloma’s (the other resident who was in the ZEDET Studio) time here, at the museum. We became good friends over the past couple of months, so it was sad to see her go. We did a jewellery exchange where I got some pieces from her previous work - she is very good at wax carving tiny hoomans - and I gave her a pair of earrings from my current casting craze and a vase from my first ever collection from when I was at university. I’ll miss her, but it is a great excuse to go visit Chile 💛
I had a short week in the workshop because I went on a little holiday 😆 I mean, my entire time here in Athens has felt like I’ve been on holiday - I have never lived so carefree and just enjoyed life, but I went on an actual holiday. It didn’t have the best start…I had left my phone at the museum and did not realise until I was halfway to my flat, and by that point everyone had gone home, and I had to wait until the next morning, so yeah, not ideal doing such a stupid thing the night before a trip 🫠 but it was fine, I got my phone back. 👍
The main star of my solo trip was going to Delos Island. It is a 30min ferry from Mykonos and it. Was. Amazing! A little fact about my name is that it is of Greek origin, and I only know this because, for some reason, in my high school R.E. class, we had to search the origin of our names, but anyway, yes, Cynthia is Greek, and it means ‘of Mount Kynthos’, and this mountain is on Delos. This island is also very important to Greece’s history; it is the central point of the Cycladic Islands and played an important role in commerce, Greek mythology and the Delian Empire. It is a genuinely fascinating place to visit, and the guided tour was 100% worth it. I am so glad I managed to squeeze this trip in during my time here. It was one of the two things that I really wanted to do - the first being visiting Davelis Cave which I did right at the beginning. 😉
Unfortunately, I did not have enough time to climb up Mount Kynthos, but that’s okay - I am already planning to come again, the next time I visit Greece. Aside from Delos, I explored Mykonos and Tinos, another neighbouring island. I had such a great experience, I just took my time, relaxed, and went with the flow. 🌊
This weekend was also Greek Orthodox Easter, so there were a lot of festivities and special events specific to the holiday that I came across whilst on the islands. And when I came back to Athens, firework displays across the whole city lit up the night sky. Greek Easter is like no other. 🫧
