A little more about me…
Since secondary school, I have always enjoyed arts and crafts. Even though all my friends were going on to more academic careers, I really wanted to see where creativity could take me. I went to college where my primary subject was Art & Design, but I also studied A-Level Mathematics, which I really enjoyed (I’m such a nerd). And to be honest, I use a lot of maths in the pieces that I make so it was worthwhile.
Where I really hit my stride in craft and working with metal was at NSCAD University in Nova Scotia, Canada. I took two metalsmithing courses and a printmaking course just for fun. I don’t think people realise this until they experience it themselves but the way craft is taught in North American academia is so different to the European research structure. It still blows my mind that I even survived it. It was so intense and busy, but I learnt so much and do not regret a single moment I was there.
The experience I had abroad made a great difference in my skills and mindset - and it gave me the courage to apply for Bishopsland.
