Week 4: Imagine being at the first Olympic Games…
I think I have a love-hate relationship with the electric rolling mill at the workshop. Sometimes it works, most times it doesn’t. Apparently, it only started acting up when I arrived so I must be cursed! Regardless of its misbehaviour, it is so good when it does work. I think I would definitely invest in one if I ever have my own space. I am always rolling something down so it would be a worthwhile venture. I just need it to keep working so I can start drawing the wire down by hand.
And I think I have settled on a piece that I will leave in the museum’s collections once my residency is over. I don’t want to give anything away as I am still unsure if it will turn out as I hope but I think it will be really cool.
My adventure of the week was to the Panathenaic Stadium, also known as Kallimarmaro. It is the only stadium in the world built entirely from marble and is so grand and so beautiful in its simplicity. To be honest, I thought the ticket was just to stand in the stadium and walk around it, listen to the audio guide and whatnot but, there is also a little museum space where it shows the history and displays of past Olympic torches and posters. Standing at the very top of the stands and just taking in the hustle and bustle of Athens, seeing the Acropolis from afar, and to be present in a classical cultural monument; it was amazing.
I also went to the Benaki Museum which is nearby and it was incredibly overwhelming. Each floor was packed with various artefacts from pottery, jewellery, stone carvings, clothing, tapestries, paintings, silverware…I could have wandered in there for hours and I did. I spent about three hours in there and probably could have stayed for longer but it was an overload for my brain.
And it is already March, where has the time gone?
